Passages, Riflemaker gallery (2016) | Exhibitions Index
‘Passages’ is the title of the show that comprises the newest works from the Now & Ever series that the artist started few years ago. This particular series has been developing from pictorial aspects to further more symbolic meanings. The series started exploring concepts like space, scale, order, colour, light letting intuition guide the painting process. What seems to be a controlled structure is the free play of visual forces. In the progress of the series, Marce realizes that this visual language serves further means, it relates to explore the tenor of existence.
In ‘Passages’ Marce playfully paints with the most basic geometric figures using masking tape as a freehand drawing where the canvas becomes the limit and where building colours slowly provide the dynamism between the psychic and material energy; the tension between mathematic certainty and poetic experimentation. In the paintings the strategy involves a relentless pursuit of visual tensions, opportunities for dialogue between shapes and energy.
Since the very beginning of human civilization we see the presence and the importance of geometry (geo: “earth”- metron: “measurement”) that Marce keeps using in her paintings, arose in a number of early cultures and developed from construction to astronomy. In the field of astronomy, geometry especially relates to mapping the positions of stars and planets, a language to explore the unknown.
Kandinsky wrote the goal is to encounter life, to make perceptible its pulsation and establish the laws that govern it. The journey to Guatemala opened a new door where she learned about Mayan cosmogony (the origin of the cosmos) and its symbols, as well as other readings of different philosophers and mystics such as Ibn ‘Arabi, Jodorowski, Gurdieff and Castaneda; and influences of artists such as Palermo or Pablo Palazuelo, Bridgit Riley or Hilma af Klimt. In ‘Passages’ the artist embraces geometry as a path to sinuate metaphysical as well as universal ideas.
